What Makes Akumal Beach Special?
Let’s kick this off by taking a look at exactly what it is that makes Akumal Beach so special.
The small beach town of Akumal attracts people from across the globe, and it is a place that is often considered to be a once in a lifetime trip for many people. But exactly what is it that makes this holiday destination so special?
Well, the main thing that makes Akumal Beach so special is how immensely beautiful this location is.
The world is packed with places of outstanding natural beauty, but until you visit Akumal beach, you may not fully appreciate just how stunning one place can be.
As we have already established, Playa Akumal directly translates to “place of the turtle”, and once you visit this place, you will understand why Akumal was given its name.
The beaches of Akumal are absolutely outstanding, and they are one of the best places in the whole of Mexico if you want to see turtles in their natural habitat.
The turquoise waters that make up the sea off of the coast of Akumal Beach are the perfect condition for seeing turtles in the wild.
You can see straight through the water to the turtles that swim in it, and you can even go swimming with them yourself.
You should never touch the turtles but you can get incredibly close to them and for many people this is something that they dream of ticking off their bucket list.
Of course, there are plenty of places across the world where you can go swimming with turtles, but it is highly unlikely that you will get an experience quite like the one that you can get in Akumal anywhere else.
This is mainly because there are lots of precautions taken to ensure that the pristine waters off the coast of Akumal and the living conditions where the turtles exist do not change.
This is why a maximum of 200 swimmers are allowed to swim with turtles at Akumal each day. So, it is important to get there early if this is something that you are interested in doing.
While turtles are easily the biggest attraction to Akumal, they aren’t the only type of marine life that you can encounter in this area of Mexico.
This place really is a location of outstanding natural beauty with the wildlife to support this. It is this that makes Akumal beach so special.
Directions To Akumal Beach
Now that we have taken a look at some of the main reasons why people visit Akumal beach, let’s take a look at how to get there.
There are three main ways that you may find yourself traveling to Akumal, they are either by a self-driven car, in a taxi, or via public transportation. So, we’ve thrown together the directions for each option to help you find your way.
Driving
First, let’s take a look at how to reach the town by car. Even if you have flown from out of the country to Mexico, there is a good chance that you may be considering renting a car during your trip.
Especially if you are thinking of visiting multiple destinations during your trip.
The chances of you staying in Akumal are relatively slim. Instead, it is very likely that you are staying outside Akumal, and plan on traveling there in a car.
With that in mind, we’ve put together the directions to get to Akumal Beach from some of the closest, and most popular, towns and cities.
Tulum
Tulum is about half an hour away from Akumal beach if you travel by car, and this is why many people choose to stay in Tulum rather than in Akumal itself.
It is a pretty good location for traveling to a variety of different landmarks in Mexico, and you can reach Akumal in no time if you hire a car while you stay in Tulum.
Reaching Akumal Beach from Tulum is easy, simply exit Tulum and travel north on the 307 highway. After about half an hour of driving, you will spot the signposts for Tulum.
Simply follow these signs and you will reach the beautiful destination of Akumal.
Playa del Carmen
If you’re not staying in Tulum, then it is incredibly likely that you are instead staying in Playa del Carmen.
Playa del Carmen is one of the most popular destinations in Mexico for those who are traveling, and many people will visit here with no intention of visiting Akumal Beach.
But seen as you’re already in the area, why not pay a visit to this beautiful beach?
It takes slightly longer to reach Akumal Beach from Playa del Carmen than Tulum, with the drive typically taking between 30 and 40 minutes. Simply exit Playa del Carmen, then take the 307 highway southbound.
Remain on this road until you see the signposts for Akumal Beach, then simply follow these signs to your destination. The drive will fly by in no time, and you’ll soon be walking on the golden sand of Playa del Carmen.
In A Taxi
If you don’t feel comfortable driving in a foreign country, then that’s absolutely fine. There are plenty of ways for you to travel to Akumal without needing to drive yourself, and one that many people opt for is a taxi journey.
If you are uncomfortable driving, and also uncomfortable navigating the public transport system of Mexico, then a taxi is your best bet. It is also a pretty good idea if you are traveling with multiple family members or with young children.
There are plenty of taxi drivers that will drive you to Akumal Beach from the neighboring towns and cities, and this will be a journey that multiple taxi drivers do each day. So don’t be afraid to inquire.
One of the best things about using a taxi is that you don’t need to worry once that taxi is booked. All you need to do is jump in the cab and your taxi driver will do the rest of the work for you.
You don’t even need to think about getting to Akumal until you reach there.
However, before you get into a taxi to take you to Akumal beach, you should agree on a fee with the taxi driver.
That way, you know exactly how much you will be expected to pay once you arrive, and this can help avoid any awkwardness if the fee ends up being higher than you anticipated.
On Public Transport
Finally, you can also reach Akumal Beach via public transport. This can often seem like the most daunting option because public transport can be very confusing.
However, it is also the cheapest option, and this is a big part of the reason why it is one of the most popular.
If you plan on traveling to Akumal Beach on public transport, then we would only recommend doing this if you are visiting the beach on a day trip.
That is because the public transport in Akumal tends to be fairly small and this can make it difficult to transport luggage there.
The best public transport option for reaching Akumal beach is the Colectivos. A colectivos is a small collective bus that operates similar to service buses across the rest of the country.
Typically, it will cost between 35 and 40 pesos per person to travel to Akumal Beach on one of these buses, but the price will differ depending on where you are traveling from.
Before you choose this option, we would recommend thoroughly researching the other options, as this may not be the most convenient option for you.
While it may be the cheapest option that doesn’t necessarily make it the best one, so always do your research before you choose how to get to Akumal beach.
